I am a member of facebook.com. It helps me to stay in touch with family members who live too far away to see. I can "see" them everyday through photos and videos and keep up with their current activities through chats. I think that facebook.com could be a great resource for the classroom if properly monitored. It could allow the child to have access to videos and tutorials. They could even chat about homework and form peer study groups online. On the Ning network, Teacherpop, there is an amazing article on how to set up private facebook accounts for your classroom and personal use. I found this article to a very good resource for me as a teacher to be.
